Confined Space Entry Team

Description

Introduction

Entry into a permit-required confined space is a team effort that requires coordination, proper training, and clearly defined roles. Every member of the entry team must possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to safely perform their duties and respond effectively to emergencies.

Confined Space Entry Team Members

The entry team typically consists of the following roles:

  • Entrant(s):
    The individual(s) who enter and perform work inside the confined space. Entrants must understand the hazards, follow safety procedures, and maintain communication with the attendant at all times.
  • Attendant:
    The person who remains outside the confined space and continuously monitors the status of entrants. The attendant ensures that conditions remain safe and initiates emergency procedures if necessary.
  • Entry Supervisor:
    The individual responsible for authorizing entry, ensuring that all safety requirements are met, verifying that the permit is complete, and overseeing all confined space activities.
  • Rescue Personnel:
    Designated individuals who are trained and equipped to perform rescue operations in the event of an emergency. They must be readily available and capable of responding quickly.

Employer Responsibilities

It is the employer’s duty to ensure the safety and readiness of the entry team by:

  • Identifying and assigning qualified team members for confined space entry operations.
  • Providing hands-on training to all entry team members before their first entry.
  • Conducting medical evaluations, fit testing, and respirator training where applicable.
  • Ensuring availability of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and rescue equipment for both entry and rescue operations.
