Confined Space Training Requirements

Description

Introduction

Employers are responsible for ensuring that all confined space entrants receive thorough and effective training to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) required to perform their duties safely.

Confined space training should be hands-on and practical, allowing participants to learn in a simulated confined space environment where they can apply procedures, use equipment, and practice emergency responses.

When Training or Retraining Is Required

Entrant training or retraining must be conducted:

  • Before the employee begins confined space work.
  • Before any change in assigned duties.
  • When changes in permit space operations introduce new or previously unrecognized hazards.
  • When modifications are made to the employer’s permit space entry procedures.
  • When an entrant demonstrates a lack of required knowledge, skills, or abilities (KSAs).

Training Documentation

After training, employers must maintain a written record of all training activities and make them available for review by employees or their authorized representatives. Training records should include:

  • Employee names
  • Topics covered
  • Dates of training
  • Trainer’s certification confirming that each entrant has demonstrated the ability to perform confined space duties safely
