Drive-thru Safety

Description

The drive-thru area allows restaurant workers to interact directly with the public but also exposes them to multiple hazards, including:

  • Noise
  • Strains and sprains
  • Workplace violence
  • Prolonged standing
  • Car exhaust

Noise Hazards

Workers in the drive-thru often wear headsets to take orders. This can expose them to loud background noise, which may increase the risk of hearing problems over time.

Reducing Noise Exposure

Worker Actions:

  • Fit headsets properly to ensure a secure and comfortable fit.
  • Avoid turning headset volume excessively high.
  • Seek medical attention if experiencing ringing in the ears or hearing issues.

Employer Actions / Safe Work Practices:

  • Use acoustical limiting devices in headsets to keep noise levels below OSHA limits.
  • Provide high-quality microphones to improve order reception.
  • Ensure headsets are adjustable and fit properly for each worker.
  • Reduce the duration of loud noise exposure by rotating workers through drive-thru duties.
