This course is designed to introduce management and employees to the seven key elements of a Safety and Health Management Program. It emphasizes steps in developing and deploying the seven elements.

Course Objectives

TO 1.0 Achieve a minimum score of 70% on the final course assessment.
LO 1.1.1 Discuss the characteristics of a successful safety culture including commitment, leadership.
LO 1.1.2 Discuss the components of a safety management system including accountability, education, hazard control, analysis/evaluation, and financial benefits.
LO 1.1.3 Describe and give examples of the 4 basic components of a safety management system: Structure, Inputs, Processes, and Outputs.
LO 1.1.4 List the four categories of employers on a worksite, and discuss the responsibilities of each category.
LO 1.2.1 Describe requirements for working with contractors on site including the pre-bid meeting, pre-mobilization meeting, and on-going safety meetings.
LO 1.2.2 Identify and summarize the criteria employers should analyze when selecting contractors including DART rates, TCIR rates, and MOD rates.
LO 1.2.3 Describe general responsibilities for project safety representatives and managers including handling contractor non-compliance and multi-employer communications and coordination.
LO 1.3.1 List the five workplace hazard categories and discuss methods to conduct worksite analysis, including hazard identification, JHAs, baseline surveys, and inspections.
LO 1.3.2 Discuss the “Hierarchy of Controls” for controlling hazards, the use of benchmarks, and Deming’s PDSA Cycle for improving safety management systems.
