Writing Steps-Determining Hazards

Description

What is a JHA?

A Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) is a systematic process used to identify potential hazards associated with specific job tasks and determine the best methods to eliminate or control those risks before they cause harm.

Involving Employees

Engaging employees in the JHA process is essential. Meet with your team to discuss both actual and potential hazards, as well as unsafe behaviors they have observed in their work environment. Together, analyze what types of incidents could occur and brainstorm ways to eliminate or control these risks.
If a hazard can be reduced or removed immediately, take corrective action right away—don’t wait for the formal JHA process to begin.

The JHA Format

In this course, we’ll use a simple and effective JHA format. While JHA forms may vary across organizations, they typically include the following key sections:

  1. Basic Job Step – The specific task or activity being performed.
  2. Hazards / Possible Injuries – The potential dangers and types of injuries that could occur.
  3. Preventive Measures – The recommended actions or controls to eliminate or minimize the hazard.

This straightforward layout provides a clear and organized way to analyze job tasks and improve workplace safety.
