Welding Safe Work Practices and PPE

Description

Welding Location and Safety
The location and specific characteristics of the workspace are critical factors for welding safety. Workers should perform welding and cutting only in areas designated for these operations.

Designated Areas and Job Approval
Welding or cutting is permitted only in approved locations unless explicit job authorization has been obtained. Before performing welding in any compartment, room, tank, or adjacent space that contains—or has contained—flammable or explosive materials, liquids, or vapors, ensure the area has been:

  • Made safe,
  • Tested, and
  • Declared safe for welding.

These precautions also apply to closed drums, tanks, and similar containers.

Fire-Safe Work Areas
Only perform welding or cutting in areas that are, or have been made, “fire-safe.” On construction sites or situations where moving the workpiece is impractical:

  • Remove combustible materials or protect them from ignition sources.
  • If fire hazards cannot be removed, use guards to contain heat, sparks, and slag, and protect immovable hazards.
  • Avoid welding or cutting if suitable fire protection cannot be established.

Prohibited Areas
Welding or cutting must not be performed in the following situations:

  • Areas not authorized by management
  • Sprinklered buildings where the fire protection system is impaired
  • Locations with explosive atmospheres, including mixtures of flammable gases, vapors, liquids, or dust with air
  • Inside uncleaned or improperly prepared tanks or equipment that have contained—or could contain—explosive atmospheres
  • Areas with accumulated combustible dust
  • Near large quantities of exposed, readily ignitable materials such as bulk sulfur, baled paper, or cotton
