Forklifts are powerful machines that enable a single operator to move heavy materials with precision and ease. By using equipment such as forklifts, carts, or hand trucks, workers can significantly reduce the risk of back injuries caused by manual lifting.

Despite their benefits, forklifts can be dangerous when not used properly. Each year, nearly 100 fatalities and over 20,000 serious injuries result from forklift-related accidents. This course provides foundational knowledge on:

  • Common types of forklifts used in various industries
  • The basic physics behind safe lifting and load handling
  • OSH Center training requirements for forklift operators
  • Core safety guidelines for operating forklifts
  • Hazards in areas with poor ventilation or flammable materials
  • Safe practices during forklift maintenance

Note: This course offers general awareness and does not replace hands-on operator training. Formal instruction on specific forklift models must be provided by a qualified trainer and should include practical demonstrations, practice time, and evaluations to ensure the operator has the required knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs). This course aligns with OSH Center regulation 1910 Subpart N – §1910.178: Materials Handling and Storage.

Free Access

As an OSH Center learner, you receive free access to all training content, including quizzes and interactive activities. To obtain official documentation like exam results, certificates, or transcripts, a certificate package may be purchased.
