The Forklift

Description

Forklifts and Powered Industrial Trucks (PITs)
A forklift is a type of Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) regulated under OSHA standards. It is the most common form of PIT and is designed to move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place material loads, including stacking items on storage racks or tiers.

Forklifts vary in size and capacity and can be powered by batteries, propane, gasoline, or diesel fuel. Some models are specifically designed for use in hazardous locations or atmospheres where a standard forklift could create a fire or explosion hazard.

According to NIOSH, the three most common types of forklift-related injuries are:

  1. Forklift overturns
  2. Workers being struck, crushed, or pinned by a forklift
  3. Falls from a forklift

Regardless of the task, forklift operation carries a significant risk of injury or death if the operator:

  • Has not been trained on the principles that enable safe lifting and movement of heavy loads
  • Is unfamiliar with the specific operation of a particular forklift
  • Operates the forklift carelessly
  • Uses a forklift that is malfunctioning or missing essential parts
