Emergency Response: Lacerations and Cuts from Utility Knives
Knowing how to respond to injuries from utility knives is critical for workplace safety.
1. Ensure Safety and Assess the Injury
- Make sure the area is safe before assisting.
- Secure any hazards, including the knife that caused the injury.
- Evaluate the severity of the cut or laceration.
2. Use Proper Equipment and PPE
- Retrieve a first-aid kit.
- Put on personal protective equipment (e.g., gloves) to prevent exposure to blood or contaminants.
3. Clean the Wound
- Rinse the wound with cool running water to remove dirt or debris.
- Clean the surrounding skin with mild soap, but avoid putting soap directly into the wound.
- Do not use hydrogen peroxide or iodine, as these can irritate the tissue.
4. Control Bleeding
- Apply gentle, steady pressure using a sterile bandage or clean cloth.
- If bleeding is severe or continues, maintain pressure and seek medical attention immediately.
5. Cover the Wound
- Once bleeding is controlled, apply a sterile adhesive bandage or dressing.
- This helps protect against infection and supports healing.
6. Seek Medical Attention
- For deep cuts, puncture wounds, or wounds that do not stop bleeding, obtain professional medical care immediately.
