Preventing Injuries

Description

Slips, Trips, and Falls

Slips, trips, and falls are among the most common workplace hazards for housekeeping staff, often caused by wet floors or cluttered walkways.

Best Practices to Minimize Risk:

  • Keep floors clean and as dry as possible. Provide mats where appropriate.
  • Place visible warning signs in areas with wet floors.
  • Immediately clean spills or cluttered areas.
  • When cleaning, work on only one side of a passageway at a time.
  • Ensure adequate lighting in hallways and stairwells.
  • Avoid rushing and maintain an unobstructed view, especially on stairs. Seek assistance when carrying bulky loads.
  • Eliminate uneven floor surfaces whenever possible.

Ladder Safety

Ladders are frequently used in housekeeping tasks. Proper inspection, maintenance, and safe use are essential to prevent falls and injuries.

Ladder Safety Guidelines:

  • Inspect and remove defective ladders: Ladders with broken or missing rungs, split side rails, corroded parts, or other damage should be immediately removed from service.
  • Secure ladders: Ensure portable ladders are lashed, blocked, or otherwise stabilized to prevent movement during use.
  • Regular inspections: Conduct routine inspections and promptly report any issues.
  • Use warning devices: Place cones or other signals to alert others when a ladder is in use.
  • Worker training: Train housekeeping staff in proper ladder use, including the Three-Point Contact Method—always maintain three points of contact using hands and feet to ensure stability.
