What is HAZWOPER?
Improper handling of hazardous materials—whether during routine operations or in the event of an accidental release—can result in serious health effects, environmental damage, and even employee fatalities. To prevent such incidents, it is crucial for workers who handle hazardous substances to learn proper management and safety techniques.
HAZWOPER stands for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response and refers to OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.120.
The regulation governs the safe handling of hazardous waste and substances and protects employees who may be exposed during:
- Cleanup operations
- Work at hazardous waste facilities
- Emergency response operations
HAZWOPER requires employers to implement specific work policies, practices, and procedures tailored to the type of work employees perform. The tasks employees carry out—such as cleanup, disposal, or emergency response—determine the safety measures and operational procedures that must be followed.
