⭐ More “STAR” Responsibilities
In the first module, we focused on the first STAR: Supervision—the responsibility of overseeing safe work practices. Now, let’s explore the remaining four responsibilities in the FIVE STARS model: Training, Accountability, Resources, and Support.
⭐ T – Training: Building Competence and Confidence
Training is one of the most powerful tools a supervisor has to prevent workplace injuries and promote a strong safety culture. There are two key components of safety education:
- Instruction – Explains the who, what, where, when, and why behind safe work practices. It helps employees understand why safety matters.
- Training – Teaches employees how to safely perform tasks, use equipment, and respond to hazards.
A well-designed training program addresses both knowledge and skills. It ensures workers know what is expected of them and how to meet those expectations safely.
Why Supervisors Should Lead Training
Supervisors are in the best position to deliver training for several reasons:
- They have direct knowledge of the tasks and hazards.
- They can tailor training to the specific needs of the job or team.
- They build credibility by demonstrating their own safety expertise.
- And importantly, teaching reinforces learning—the more a supervisor teaches, the more they understand the material themselves.
By leading training sessions, supervisors stay current, sharpen their own understanding, and become more effective at identifying and correcting unsafe behaviors.
✅ Quick Tip:
Employees often underperform simply because they don’t understand why a rule exists or how to apply it. Clear training helps eliminate confusion and sets everyone up for success.
Next, we’ll dive into the remaining STAR responsibilities:
- ⭐ A – Accountability
- ⭐ R – Resources
- ⭐ S – Support
