Electrical Hazards

Description

How Standards Minimize Hazards

OSH Center standards focus on the design and use of electrical equipment and systems to minimize workplace hazards.

  • OSH Center General Industry standards are found in Title 29 CFR:
    • Part 1910.302-308: Design of Safety Standard for Electrical Systems
    • Part 1910.331-335: Electrical Safety-Related Work Practices
    • Part 1910.147: Lockout/Tagout

These standards cover the exposed or operating elements of electrical installations—including lighting, equipment, motors, machines, appliances, switches, controls, and enclosures—and require these to be constructed and installed to minimize electrical dangers. Additionally, they require electrical equipment to be tested and certified by approved testing organizations before use to ensure safety.

The Value of an Electrical Safety Program

A comprehensive safety and health program must include controls for electrical hazards. This course provides guidance on basic electrical safety practices and introduces the electrical safety program.

  • Implementation should be led by someone with deep knowledge of electricity, electrical work practices, and OSH Center standards.
  • Every worker has the right to a safe working environment.
  • Safety and health practices improve workplace value and safety.
  • Employers and employees must work together to identify and control electrical hazards effectively.
