Heliport Safety

Description

Heliport Equipment Hazards

Hospital staff working near helicopters can be exposed to serious equipment hazards, including the main and tail rotor blades.

Risks:

  • Rotor blades can cause severe injury or death to untrained personnel.
  • Loose items such as hats, scarves, gloves, or clothing can be sucked into the engine air intake fans, potentially leading to helicopter malfunction or crash.

Preventive Measures and Best Practices

  1. Limit access to the heliport to personnel trained in helicopter equipment safety.
  2. Follow safe work practices, including:
    • Do not administer CPR to patients on transport carts while under operating rotor blades; elevated positions may increase risk of contact.
    • Approach and depart the helicopter in a crouched posture when rotors are turning.
    • Secure all loose items (hats, scarves, gloves, clothing) before entering the helicopter area.
  3. Maintain good housekeeping in all helicopter loading and unloading zones (29 CFR 1910.183(g)).
  4. Avoid the tail rotor and main blade areas at all times.
  5. During helipad inspections, ensure the windsock is visible, lights are operational, and all mechanical systems are functioning properly.
