Fluids That Can Spread Bloodborne Pathogens

Bloodborne pathogens are transmitted when infected body fluids are transferred from one person to another.

Common body fluids that can carry bloodborne pathogens include:

  • Blood
  • Cerebrospinal fluid
  • Semen
  • Vaginal secretions

Note: Semen and vaginal secretions can transmit bloodborne pathogens, but typically only during sexual contact.

Using disposable gloves and other appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) can help protect you from accidental exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
