What is Housekeeping?
Housekeeping refers to maintaining a worksite in a clean and sanitary condition to reduce the risk of injury and exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
Employers are required to implement a written cleaning schedule and determine the most effective methods for decontaminating all areas within a facility.
Four Types of Regulated Waste Requiring Special Handling:
- Liquid or semi-liquid blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM)
- Contaminated items that could release OPIM in liquid or semi-liquid form
- Items caked with OPIM that may release infectious material during handling
- Contaminated sharps
Proper housekeeping is essential for preventing exposure to bloodborne pathogens and ensuring a safe workplace.
