Parking Lot Safety

Description

School parking lots are among the most hazardous areas on campus. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s report “Traffic Safety Facts 2008: Pedestrians,” parking lots are the leading location for pedestrian injuries among children under 12.

Student Drop-off and Pick-up Safety
Drop-off and pick-up zones can become especially risky for children if not properly managed. Safety can be improved through measures such as clear striping, the use of safety cones and signs, active supervision, and consistent enforcement of rules.

Additional strategies to enhance safety and efficiency include:

  • Encouraging students to walk, bike, or carpool.
  • Separating motor vehicle traffic from pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Establishing distinct lanes for drop-off and pick-up.
  • Providing assistance to students as they enter or exit vehicles.
