Operating the Forklift

Description

Forklift Safety Overview

A forklift is a powerful tool that enables a single operator to lift and place heavy loads with precision and minimal effort.

Never use a forklift to lift people or allow someone to reach elevated locations using the forklift, as this creates an extremely high risk of serious injury or death.

Risks of Improper Forklift Operation

Using a forklift, hand truck, or cart instead of lifting items manually can reduce the risk of back injuries. However, serious hazards arise when a forklift operator:

  • Lacks proper training in the principles of physics that govern forklift operation.
  • Is unfamiliar with the specific forklift being used.
  • Operates the forklift carelessly.
  • Uses a forklift with malfunctioning or missing parts.

Even experienced operators must follow proper safety procedures to prevent accidents.

Minimum Age Requirement

  • Federal law prohibits anyone under 18 from operating a forklift.
  • Operators over 18 must be properly trained and certified before use.
  • OSHA emphasizes these regulations to protect young workers, particularly during peak employment periods such as summer.
